These songs were originally used to send warriors into battle wishing them a safe and victorious journey or to celebrate their safe homecoming. Most of the songs sung today originate from the Kiowa, Comanche, and Ponca tribes of Oklahoma. The Kiowa people have been instrumental in preserving these songs and the tradition of honoring soldiers and veterans. Today the "49" has evolved into an after hours social dance. Most "49s" are organized by word of mouth at pow wows. Some are sanctioned by pow wow organizations, offering big cash prizes for "49" singing competition. However, most "49s" are attended by people simply wanting to sing and dance and enjoy the camaraderie of other "49ers." This recording was originally released in 1982 and has been digitally enhanced from the original master recordings.
