Nakai and Eaton create a richly textured landscape on this collaboration, representing a musical history of the past five centuries. Nakai plays an eagle bone whistle, gourd rattle, claves and shaker as well as some singing on several cuts. Eaton plays harp guitar, koto harp guitar o’ele’ n strings, vihuela, synth guitar, bow harp, drums, 12 string guitar and lyre. Many of these instruments are of his own invention! This is a musical theater production with a consistent theme. There are three sections to the album: “Witnesses,” “First People,” and “Dreamers.” Each song is accompanied by a written poem in the liner notes. Eaton’s array of stringed instruments lend an ethereal quality that seems to melt into the atmosphere as one listens. The Black Lodge Singers join in on the third section for “Earth Chant” and “Many Flags,” which incorporates the “American Flag Song,” sung at pow-wows for the presentation of the flag. Two bonus cuts included on the CD.
