Peyote songs are musical prayers of the Native American Church.Grammy Award winners Verdell Primeaux (Sioux) and Johnny Mike (Diné) developed a unique healing chant called "Two in One" music which are peyote melodies and harmonies sung without the traditional accompaniment of drum or rattle. These newer style of songs were brought to the attention of a wider audience through the recordings of Robbie Robertson. There are two of these songs included on Hours Before Dawn. The background of both artists is discussed in detail in the liner notes including Primeaux’s childhood meningitis cure from his father using peyote and prayer.
