Ethnomusicologist, Frances Theresa Densmore traveled to the Dakotas in 1911 to record Lakota songs and study their culture. The American Folklife Center in the Library of Congress house more than 2,500 recordings Densmore made between 1907 and 1941. Kevin Locke presents some of these songs in their unadorned form. Nothing was added except for the natural sounds in the background from a live recording made in the Dakotas. There is a little bit of chanting but mostly this is a quiet album with a beautiful purity and authenticity to it.
