The centerpiece of all rituals for the Lakota is the sacred pipe. It provides the connection between the Lakota and Wakantanka or "Great Spirit." Bonds between tribes, families and groups were consecrated with the pipe. Actions that went against the spirit and good intentions of the pipe could result in great misfortune or possibly death. The pipe is always treated with extreme reverence and those that smoke from it or even handle it must be respectful of its awesome spiritual power. Joseph Shields, Jr. was raised in the traditional Lakota way on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. He was given the name Wanbli oyuspa meaning "Catches the Eagle." The Lakota name Wahancanka means "Shield" and is used on the cover's artwork to communicate that these songs represent the Shields family singing tradition.
