The persecution and near genocide of Native societies by European invaders is examined through the eyes of the Pequot tribe who were among the first to make contact with white settlers. As Christians, these invading cultures were motivated by the arm of the church who looked upon all Indian Nations as heathens, forbidding them to speak their own languages and enslaving them and scattering members of the Pequots to different regions of the area.
As a tribe, they have learned to adapt to the white man’s way and prosper from what is the now the largest casino in the world. It is also the location of the Schemitzun Pow Wow which attracts the largest crowds and best dancers.
Interspersed with the program are snippets of other productions depicting the history of the Pequots and the struggles they have endured. Several articulate tribal members are interviewed giving the viewer a very balanced and thoughtful overview of their prosperous enterprises and the criticism they have attracted because of it, not only from the media but from Natives as well. Serves as an excellent introduction for anyone interested in a complete explanation of what pow wow is and how it affects one particular tribe and the purpose of its existence for Native people.
